Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Barr. Onofiok Luke has assured the execute arm of the readiness of the legislature to give the necessary support in the 2018 budget to enable the state government complete some ongoing projects at the Ibom International Airport.



Speaking at the conference room of the airport shortly after inspecting the pace of work at the power sub-station, the commercial building and the second runway, the Speaker who described the airport project as a strategic infrastructure, said government's investment in the project was a step in the right direction. While inspecting the injection Substation which will boost 24 hour power supply at the airport, Luke asked the Commissioner for Special Duties, the airport management and the contractor handling the project, Schneider to consider the training of Akwa Ibom indigenes on the maintenance of the power infrastructure installed at the airport.

"There is need for technology transfer. The power project here is handled by a very reputable power firm Schneider. There is need for technology transfer to get our young men and women trained so that they would be able to maintain the facility and be able to fix it when things gets bad, rather than bringing in expatriates.
"I am very impressed with the work i have seen at the sub-power station".
"We have to ensure that things are in the right place in this(aviation) sector so that we can derive maximum benefit. I am very impressed with the work i have see here. We came here to see things for ourselves.
We will do all within our powers to ensure the expansion of facilities, and safety of passengers at the airport".

On the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul facility, M.R.O at the airport, Speaker Luke stated that the project was of utmost concern to the lawmakers, saying it was expedient for necessary steps to be taken to ensure that the facility becomes operational.
Conducting the Speaker and members of the Appropriation committee round the project sites, the Commissioner for Housing and Special Duties, Mr. Akan Okon explained that the power sub-station will boost steady power supply at the airport. The team was also conducted round the commercial building which has been completed. It has a pharmacy, restaurant and a gift shop. According to the Commissioner, N130 Million was expended on the project.
Also inspected was the second runway which is under construction. It has a width of 60 metres.
Chairman of the Appropriation committee, Usoro AkpanUsoh explained that the essence of the visit was to enable members of committee ascertain the level of work done at the project sites in order to guide the lawmakers in the discharge of their legislative responsibilities as regards the 2018 budget.

Meanwhile, members of the Appropriation committee have since departed to Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital to ascertain the true situation of things at the Akwa Ibom Governor's in Lagos which recently generated some controversy.
